Portsmouth to Bermuda WX - 08 May

Portsmouth to Bermuda WX
08 May

PREPARED: May 08 10:23z FM: WEATHER ROUTING INC. (WRI)

Synopsis: A front extends from w'rn New England s'ward through New Jersey and then sw'ward across w'rn Virginia and this will move quickly e-se'ward such that by tomorrow morning it will extend from the e'rn tip of Nova Scotia ssw'ward to just north of Bermuda and then w'ward along/near 34N to south of Cape Hatteras. The front will stall tomorrow and weaken as it slowly drifts n'ward across 35N during the 10th.

Ridging will broaden from the Chesapeake se'ward and offshore late today/tonight. This ridging will then tend to merge with a second and larger area of broad ridging to the south of the weakening front. The axis of the ridging will tend to consolidate very near Bermuda and w'ward to the Carolinas.

Conclusions: A front moving offshore of the Chesapeake today will yield a SW-W-NW'ly veering of winds over Zones I and F, with NW'lys in place for near coastal waters by the early afternoon hours over Zone I and for Zone F by late afternoon/evening hours. A general veering and easing from NW-NE-SE'ly will then occur for both Zone I and F tonight through tomorrow morning as high pressure builds offshore, which will allow for an abatement of the higher seas over the Gulf Stream. Steadier SW-W'ly winds will fill-in for Zones I and F by tomorrow evening, with lighter NE-E'ly winds to the north of the stalled boundary over Zone I tomorrow evening (i.e. north of 37N). Lighter winds will be in place for Zone C in later periods.

Based on the latest information, a suggested waypoint to recommend for best currents is a direct route from the Chesapeake Bay to 35-30N/70-00W, then direct- Bermuda. This will allow for a faster crossing of the Gulfstream and favorable currents through much of Zone F, avoiding some adverse currents in the south central portions of grid F.
