LONG RANGE CERTIFICATE (LRC) COURSE AT CHIEFTAIN TRAINING
If you would like to join the ARC radio nets then you will require a SSB (Single Sideband) radio set on board. Modern SSBs are fitted with both Medium Frequency (medium range) and High Frequency (Long Range) radio. To operate a SSB set legally at least one person on board your yacht is required to hold the LRC / Long Range Certificate (or the higher level GOC). The UK LRC is recognised all over the world and includes the contents of the SRC (Short Range Certificate). The certificate is required by operators of MF and HF equipment on board voluntary fit vessels, (leisure and commercial small craft under 24m).
In addition to our safety nets the SSB sets ensures that if the unthinkable ever happens and your yacht or your crew require assistance you can make long range digital and voice distress and medical calls.
The 4-day LRC course at Chieftain Training (Southampton) is for blue water sailors who carry SSB (Single Sideband Radio) and for commercial sailors/delivery skippers for yachts up-to 24m. During the course you will get plenty "hands on” practice of using Chieftain's range of live (2022) Icom SSB and VHF sets. The course also makes use of Sailor, Simrad, Selva and Nasa training sets/simulators.The Chieftain crew will coach and prepare you for three days before an external examiner visits on day 4. Following a successful exam the Certificate of Competence is then issued by AMERC.
