Ahead - Log 2 - Vikings at sea

After the start that was quite fun we are now getting settled in our watch  schedule once more. It seems we are adjusting much easier than on the stretch from Casablanca to Las Palmas - the sea is also much calmer.Appologies to the english sloop (number withheld of obvious legal reasons) that lost their fishing gear by us doing some luffing behind their tail. Unfortunately for them their line and gear stuck at our keel - but fortunately fornus we got it cleared up. At St Lucia we shall be happy to return the gear with some beers - tonight we can do nothing more than enjoy the appr. 16 kilo Dorado we caught ... :-)Sailing has been easy - gennaker as the only sail has proved an advantage for us - easy trimming and speed was maintainedall during the night. We shall see how the picture. read more...

Ahead - Log 3 - The Big Bang

5 o'clock in the morninng, life was good, sun was shining, the SOG neared double numbers :-)Bang - down went the gennakker. Chafing in the top - haul dumped in the middle of the mast - happy days.So we had to deliberately sail into a more calm area ( thanks to Clearpoint weather always very accurate). Once in there our climber hero Tom had a couple of trips to the top - to grind some sharp edges and hoist a new haulyard for the gennakker. After job well done (the gennaker haulyard was reinforced with some garden hose!) we celibrated with dinner and a beer - just to find that the wind was completely gone. And I mean completely - we were doing 0.5 knots BACKWARDS and not even a gennakker hoisted could back us around :-)So time for swimming and generally enjoying the calom sea - around 4 in. read more...

Ahead - Log 4, Deecmber 7th

Yes, it is true ; There is a lot of water in the Atlantic, but for some reason it does not seem to comply with the wind. We have been trolling along with 3 to 5 knots the past few days - we really need to be up and running on 7-8 knots if we are to arrive at St Lucia in time for the last arrival party. Oh well, we know we are not the only ones that is waiting for the wind to come.Life on AHEAD is easy and comfortable although the thought of having 12-14 days still to go is a bit frustrating. A few days ago we heard a distress call. A yacht and a fisherboat had collided some 50 miles north of us. We changed course and headed for the accident. Fortunately no big damage had happend to the ship. A lost mast was the worst thig and another fishingships had arrived before us and provided the. read more...

Ahead - log x

Sailors and farmers have one thing in common. They are always complaining about the weather. Just as we thought that we would get stuck forever in a low wind zone, the wind rose and soon we were upt nowoc and running on a speed of 7-8 knots. Nice feeling to see the wind fill up the sails and feel the boat begin to live again. The spirit of the crew rose accordingly. If this wind continues we will be able to see the Pitons in 7-8 days or less. And it is needed. We keep catching fish, Dorados and Tuna, after our last supply of meat was eaten some days ago. Fish is healthy they say, but fish every day??? Oh well, we have lots of fruit and rice also, so we will survive. But for some reason food have become the big topic on board, and bananasplits, rom and icecream with chocolate sauce is a. read more...
