Mairmade - Day#18 - Last Full Day at Sea

Not an especially noteworthy day otherwise.Sunrise made a strong showing, although Claudia was the only audience member (she does the last shift of the night).By 1pm, we had covered 143nm since the same time the day before, bringing our total distance covered for the passage to 2750nm. Spare time was used to start preparing for "post-passage"...Watermaker ran to fill our tank while the washing machine cranked out 4 loads of laundry. We oscillated between sailing and motoring all day, with the hope that, as forecasted, we could cover the last 150-200nm on an upwind tack (where Mairmade is much more comfortable sailing), but the wind shifts and calm periods kept us waiting. We're sailing now as I write, but with below forecasted wind speeds. We also have a strong desire to make it to St.. read more...

Mairmade - Day# 17 - Calm

After posting yesterday's report (as I went to sleep last night), we had another fun night of sailing. The wind remained on the beam and with a sustained 10~12 knots all night, we enjoyed 6.5~7 knots of boat speed (even without Chloe's help).Fr. Russ, Claudia, and I all got to play dodge-a-squall during our night watches which always makes things interesting. While we do single person watches (since there's only 4 crew), we do keep two people in the cockpit throughout the night, with the second person ready to go, although allowed to sleep. It always takes two of us to handle the squalls while on sail. The wind eventually gave up around 9am and the engine came back on, but the overnight wind drove us to a 24-hour distance covered of 152nm.We're now less than 300nm from St. Lucia. With the. read more...

Mairmade - Day #16 - Bonus Day

Today's 24-hour distance travelled at 1pm was an unremarkable 139nm, our second lowest for the trip! But what made today feel like a bonus is that shortly after that 1pm reading we finally got just enough wind for Chloe to play, and with the wind direction being about perfect to maximize our boat speed in a direct line to St. Lucia, Chloe played all day!The wind was a light 6-8 knots most of the day, but we were still able to achieve 6-7knots SOG.Normally we wouldn't fly Chloe at night, but we just didn't have the heart to take her back inside, so we let her play as we enjoyed the sunset on the bow.... And then we let her play some more 🤣. Finally she got to rest for the night at around 11pm UTC, and we're back on our main and jib for the night watches.Fingers crossed for a better. read more...

Mairmade - Day#15

Our 24 hour distance at 1pm UTC today was a predictable 145nm.Predictable because we motored all of those 24 hours at a steady 6 knot average! We also passed the 75% mark, and have less than 600nm to go as I write. 🙌Today felt like any other coastal cruising day on the boat. The weather is beautiful with full sun and a light wind (most of which we create with our 6 knots of boat speed!), so what better thing to do than go for a swim!We stopped the engine, opened the stern door and jumped in the water for 30 minutes; pool toys included. And although the the wind and waves have subsided, the swell remains; challenging any standing activity (e.g. showering on the stern platform 😛)#BoatLifeFr. Russ was the responsible adult that stayed on board should anything unexpected happen, and also to. read more...

Mairmade - Day#14 - The [fuel] "Situation"

After motoring all night at a very low RPM (1200 vs. our normal 1500 - 1600), we got a reading on our fuel consumption along with updated weather forecasts... It's a mixed bag!For the forecasts: The good news is that the main models all seem to be aligning (saying about the same thing) for the balance of our passage, the bad news: they all say no wind! 🤣🤣We're no longer heading to 14N, 48W to find wind because we don't think there'll be any by the time we get there. Instead we're taking a direct line to St. Lucia on a heading of 275°M 👍For the fuel consumption, we did much better than we expected at 1200RPM, and extrapolating our consumption rate, boat speed, and remaining fuel, we think we can motor all the way to St. Lucia with about 5% to spare (details below). This is great news. read more...
