Not all work and no play - ARC Seminar and Social Programme Continues!

Not all work and no play!
21 November 2012

It’s a hive of activity on the docks now as final crew members arrive, food and provisions are unpacked and store on board and last minute checks and preparations are being made. But it’s not all work and no play here in Las Palmas!

Participants have been enjoying a very busy programme of social events and activities to enhance their ARC experience prior to the Atlantic crossing: One of the highlights is the annual costume party where crews get a chance to be creative and dress up in a suitable theme. This year it’s The ARC ‘Masked Ball’ costume party. Many of the 1,250+ crew taking part will get into the spirit of the occasion and hope to win one of the many prizes for best dressed team or individual. It’s usually a night to remember…

The ARC social events are an important part of the programme before the start as World Cruising Club Director, Jeremy Wyatt explains: “It’s a great way to meet the people you are going to be sailing with in the ARC, so you know them before you go to sea. It helps build the camaraderie when boats are sailing, so crews know who they are talking to on the communications net at sea, having met them at one of the sundowners or other social events before departure.

It can be a tense and hectic time in the build up to the start, especially for those who have never crossed the Atlantic Ocean before. The ARC programme gives an opportunity for participants to talk to other sailors over a beer in a more relaxed atmosphere and crews can enjoy talking to other like-minded people in similar boats before the trip.

ARC participants are also attending a series of seminars and training activities throughout the week. These are aimed specifically at key skills so focus very much on practical tips for sailing the Atlantic, including routeing and weather, what the weather is going to be like, managing emergencies, tips on maintaining health and first aid at sea and emergency navigation, as well as practical sessions on these and many other subjects.
