ARC Europe event team, Lyall Burgess and Kieran Higgs have safely touched down in Horta on the island of Faial in the Azores. The rally office will open tomorrow morning in preparation for the first yachts to arrive after their 1800NM sail from Bermuda. From the fleet viewer the first boats to arrive in Horta are A Lady, Sookie and Nora Simrad, with an expected arrival on Saturday morning.
It has been a fast passage for the fleet as a whole compared to previous years, providing participants plenty of time to explore this beautiful island as well as the neighbouring island of Pico, home to the largest mountain in Portuguese waters. Only a short ferry ride from the marina, participants will be encouraged to finally stretch their legs after a long passage at sea and make the worthwhile hike to the summit.
Horta marina is a thriving sailing hub, as geographically it is located in an ideal location for yachts heading back to Europe from the Caribbean. It has some great facilities and some great bars for crews to enjoy a cold drink on dry land and soak up some idyllic Azores culture. We look forward to greeting the ARC Europe fleet in our yellow T-shirts over the next few days.
