March 23
Yesterday morning we finally caught a fish. It was early in the morning, around 5:30am. We started motoring around 5am since there was no wind....and apparently it was breakfast time. We caught what we think was a mackerel, around 24 inches long. Good thing we caught a fish or Lee would have made us stay out here until we did! (Just kidding - at this point he's as anxious as the rest of us to get there.) The girls haven't been bugging us with the "are we there yet?" (that's my line) but they are getting a bit bored with the lack of running and playing. They do a pretend karate fighting (they've been watching Karate Kid this leg) and run and jump all over the cockpit, which of course makes me think they are going overboard....
So we're still motoring when no wind and sailing when possible. Yesterday that meant launching the spinnaker 3 times - twice on starboard and once on port, using the genoa for several hours.....now at 3am we're back to motoring. We should have a bit more wind today if the forecast is accurate - hope so. We're not expected to have access to fuel at the first stop so we don't want to run out, our refrigeration really requires the generator running, we can't run it on solar alone. And anchoring/maneuvering within anchorages is much tougher if we can't use our engine.
Back to watch, 342 miles to go.
