We have had great wind since leaving Galapagos on Sunday and have traveled 510 miles so far. The weather was completely unexpected and we anticipated motoring for the first 2-3 days. Early this afternoon, we reached the trade winds and these conditions, 15-20 knots from the east, are likely to continue for the remainder of the passage. If we can maintain this pace we'll reach our destination in about two more weeks. Probably not soon enough because the girls keep asking, "are we almost there?" and our answer is yes. We are closer to getting to the Marquesas Islands than when we left! Not sure what else to say because we have a long way to go....2451 more miles!
We have not had much luck with fishing, yet. We had a fish on the line yesterday afternoon and Kathryn thought is was a tuna. I was about ready to pitch dinner and have fresh sashimi for dinner. The fish had other plans. So, we had fajitas instead. They were very good.
I have tried my unskilled hand at baking bread at sea. Of course, I've made bread before but in a very different conditions. The first loaf looked good but was not fully cooked. The second loaf didn't look as good but tasted much better. Well, as Lew said, "it tastes great with butter and jam". My third loaf is resting in the refrigerator and will go in the oven tomorrow morning. I'd like to believe that third time is the charm. I also made a loaf of banana bread. It was well received but I think anything that has sugar in it would be consumed on this boat!
The girls have been complaining a bit about not feeling well. This usually happens in the morning and later in the afternoon. Ironically, it coincides with the time we are to work on their school reports in the morning or scheduled reading in the afternoon. Probably not seasick...
That's it for now. We are all doing well and getting into a routine of sorts for this passage. Its only been a few days but I know we are all looking forward to arriving in Hiva Oa. Crusing, for me, has never been about the passage it has always been getting to the destination!
