Darby Q on the Quay
Tuesday 27. 5, 2008
It’s a blue sky, bright sunshine, a little breeze. Annie gets up early and goes for a run (/ walk! ) round the village before defrosting the fridge and freezer. Ian and Stewy fiddle faddle with jobs, wash the decks and fill the water tanks. We’ve organised a dock BBQ to use up our steaks and burgers. The Barton family arrive and we invite them to stay for the BBQ. We set up camp on the dock and get the BBQ going where we’re soon joined by Andante of Mersey, Tallulah Ruby, Strega, Into the Blue, and Graptolite. The Harbour Café kindly lend us their picnic benches and Into The Blue order a huge bowl of chips by way of thanks! The BBQ’s great fun and we enjoy good and banter crack right on the quay! Rowan and Ellis are a great help to’ing and fro’ing from the boat getting supplies – Ellie nearly falls in! In the middle of it all the Port authority man arrives to remind us to take the Q flags down – another wee job for Jonathon! – and that we shouldn’t be bringing in any fresh produce from other countries – good job it’s already gone…..
Afterwards Stewy goes for a walk round the town, Brian goes for a cycle and Ian and Annie go for a snorkel, meeting Gordon, Linda and the Barton family on the beach. In no time we’re back, scrubbed and polished for the taxi to Island Night; apparently an experience not to be missed on Rarotonga - traditional music ,dancing and local food. The dancing is by local children as young as 7 years old and they are a sight to behold – colourful costumes and grass skirts. A great night ends up with us trying to do the same at the “Whatever Bar” – enough said!
