Distraction - Sunday Morning

It’s a relaxed Sunday morning for the crew of Distraction - hello to everyone who is following us. The big seas, grey skies and squalls we encountered yesterday have passed through and we are enjoying beautiful blue sky again and although the big swell is present it is not causing such bad rolling as over the last few days and we’re enjoying a comfortable sail again, with 15-20 knots of wind. Our position is currently 870 miles to destination and based on our daily mileage we should reach St Lucia on Friday afternoon/ evening just in time for sundowners!! Thursday saw another productive fishing afternoon..a few minutes after putting the reals out we landed a whopping Dorado measuring 1.10m from head to tail. Distraction - 3/12/19

Good morning. It’s 0300 boat time here, that’s 0400 GMT, since we have moved the clock back once to accommodate sunrise and sunset at a more suitable hour. Another few time changes to go before we reach St Lucia. We had another great sail yesterday. Following a minor tear repair in the morning we had the spinnaker up again all day, we were racing along. To facilitate a better cooking and eating angle we changed over to white sails before dinner; and a good job too as we are now truly ‘rocking and rolling’ in 17 to 20 knots of wind, gusting 25. The passing trains of cloud are causing some small wind shifts as they travel south westerly; otherwise all is stable - although walking around below can be tricky. And around us only sea and sky... and where better to spend a birthday than the. read more...

Distraction - 30th November

Hi All, apologies for the lack of communication from Distraction we have been settling into our watch pattern and working at trying to find more wind. And all of our excitement has been good. After a great start and good wind we have spent nearly a week travelling south to maximise the wind. We have now turned the corner and are heading west!We have had many visitations from dolphins, shortly before supper yesterday we had an acrobatic display by around 20, and we have been lucky enough to see the magic of dolphins speeding through the phosphorescence at night on more than one occasion. A sight I could never ever tire of. Yesterday saw us pass by a pod of small whales and our first flying fish sighting. Squid have made it onto the deck at night, why do they do that? And, the boots are off. read more...
