Serendipity IV - Prepweek and start to World ARC 2024

It was a busy prepweek. Not had we get to know so many amazing people with which we will sail alongside and spend happy times with. We also had to prepare SERENDIPITY IV and ourselves for our first leg from Saint Lucia to Santa Marta in Columbia.Checking the boat and the equipment for the safety check was first priority. Get all the last few bits from the ship chandler’s and some food. Luckily, we did the big provisioning in Martinique already.Michael went under water and cleaned the hull meticulously and Nina went up the mast for a check and a bird’s eye view. Our meals and snack bags for the first days at sea are prepared and our bed in the salon made. We also checked our charts and the weather forecast to plan our route.Last preparation on Saturday morning and a short notice change of. read more...

Serendipity IV - 13. Tag

Also kein Wettrennen unsererseits.

Serendipity IV - Beginning of our second week

Tuesday, 24th January 2023.We started into our second week on sea with a squall which brought a lot of rain and drenched us through. Just before this wet encounter we tried to fix our Watt’n’Sea Hydrogenerator. During the first days the pin we used to fix it down into the water broke so we used the other fixing method with a line in stead. But also this line broke yesterday, as a result it couldn’t generate energy anymore. Unfortunately, our attempts to use another pin to hold the Hydrogenerator in place failed as it was too thick for the hole. But after lunch Michael had another go as the wind and waves quieten down. Now a screwdriver acts as a fixing pin fixed with string and duck tape. It works! We hope it will hold fast for at least the next two weeks as it generates vital energy. read more...

Serendipity IV - Montag

Serendipity IV - First week on our Atlantic passage

Sunday, 22nd January 2023.It’s now a week ago when we waved goodbye to family and friends as well as our fellow ralliers and the nice and helpful ARC-Team in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. They were emotional moments and a tear or two were hidden behind our sunglasses. The first three days were, as everybody keeps telling, a getting used to to the movement, to the up and down, the swaying in all directions. Everything takes longer than just a few hours ago in the marina. Everything needs to be done with one hand. There is the saying ‘one hand for the boat, one hand for the sailor’. It is true. You have to hold on all the time and think about normal, everyday’s action how to do them with just one hand and an unstable stand. Okay, we know all this from our past time sailing but it is. read more...
