We hired a tour guide today to drive around with us today. The island was formed by a volcano. You have the choice of sea shore or mountains. We choose mountains. The mountains are tall and steep with huge gorges between the high mountain peaks. There are large caldera also between the high spots.
The first area that we went to was Piton Maido. Looking out over this area you could see much lower land where there were villages on small plateaus. There are no roads into these areas. A big sport or activity on the island is trekking thru these areas. We climbed down a trail towards these villages but did not come near getting there. We hiked 50 minutes down and back 50 minutes to get a feel. There are small places for trekkers to stay for the night to continue trekking.
