Last night at the Pousada de Santa Cruz, the fort overlooking the marina, the ARC Europe participants were hosted by the Azores Tourist Board to a Welcome Reception and Prizegiving for Leg 2 outside on the terrace. We were pleased also that yachts Wild Goose and First Edition arrived safely just before the function got fully underway, and it was great to welcome them into Horta with a loud cheer from the 100 or so participants standing on the terrace. Crew from Wild Goose and First edition were moved by the warm welcome after a tough 15 days at sea
We were welcomed by Sr. Miguel Cymbron, the Director of Tourism for the Azores to Horta and he introduced the invited guests including representatives from the Port Authority, Frontier services, City Hall, Clube Naval da Horta and of course, Peter Cafe Sport.

Reviewing the 1,800NM Leg 2 from Bermuda to Horta it was first of all important to recognise the 3 yachts that were not with us in Horta and update everyone with their latest news and position to the finish line. Common Sense are due in within the next 24hours, Annemare has sailed direct from New York and is 260NM from Horta whilst Freedom Found 920NM. A special mention was given to yacht Outer Limits, which sadly was struck by a whale on route to Horta and had to abandon ship. Lyall read an email sent from Joost, owner and skipper of Outer Limits, thanking the fleet for their support, expressing how he '...expected a lot but never this collision with a whale.. it is very good we had safety briefings and inspection because we all need it now'. The fleet here in Horta pass their best wishes to Outer Limits and hope some good comes out of this very unfortunate situation.
