La Boheme arrived in St Helena this morning with a very tired crew on board. Gregory and Anna Haremza along with crew member Ben Rodanski have towed the dismasted Running with Scissors for just over 200 miles all under sail. As La Boheme had to be hand steered and a constant watch kept on the tow only one person could sleep at any one time.
The yacht under tow, a 6.5m Mini-Transat, deployed a drogue to stabilize its movement and the injured skipper stayed on board in constant radio contact. Lionel Dyck, a retired paratrooper is now safely ashore in St Helena and the crew of La Boheme are looking forward to exploring the island then continuing on to Salvador. Running With Scissors was taking part in the annual Governor's Cup race from Cape Town to St Helena, when she dismasted 300 miles from St Helena.
With more arrivals in Jamestown Bay, attention inevitably turns to the social side of sailing, and tonight there is a “Bring and Braai” at the yacht club for crew of the Governors Cup, but as all are welcome, many Cape Bahia and World ARC crews are planning to attend.
Anne’s Place in Jamestown was buzzing last night as the participants of all the events gathered together to compare notes on the weather conditions, fish caught and lost and how they passed the time in the rather slow but very comfortable conditions on this last leg.
