Day 16
Day 16 will probably be remembered as one of our best sailing days. We had strong but consistent 15 knot to 20 knot winds and following seas which was accompanied by bright sunshine despite Emily’s predication of torrential rain in the morning. For once I was pleased she was wrong. When you get the right combination of wind and sail the whole boat just flies along and we managed to cover 190 miles in 24 hours, something of a record for us.
Most of the day saw the normal routine of people reading books, doing a little washing, filling bottles with sea water for washing up and getting in a spot of sunbathing. David may have overdone it a little and by the end of the day he looked a little pink to say the least. The strong sunshine finally dried out John’s bed and we were able to get the cabin back to normal.
Chef Kaare insisted on cooking again, assisted by Gregorio, and we were treated to a beef broth full of vegetables but thankfully lacking any cauliflower and broccoli both which, in my opinion, should never have been allowed on the boat. Are there no ends to the talents of our Norwegian Chef. Sadly the meal was interrupted by a squall but it has to be said we are getting pretty good at clearing away the dinner plates and furling the headsail all in under a minute.
Later in the day saw three Little Egrets flying around the boat and at one point we thought they would land but the wind proved too strong. Another sign that we are getting closer to land. There is much speculation as to when we might finally touch land and the general consensus is Friday sometime in the afternoon hopefully in time for happy hour but with all things on a boat it depends on the wind, how well we can keep to our course and good fortune.
