We were very keen on visiting Brazil and now we are
not too sure. From a personal security point of view it was most worrying
- the fleet experienced at least six muggings or pick pocket or knife
threatening incidents. The rubbish collecting services seem to have given
up and even some of the magnificent building looked delapadated. However
we did hire a car and go on a four night tour, visiting a national park - which
included a 1km walk through an immense dark grotto - and some of the off shore
islands. All very exciting especially the 40km drive along a pot holed, 50
% sand 50 % broken tarmac, so called A class road! All in all I think it
fair too say that we are glad to be on our way although the weather is not being
kind to us - headwinds, current against and an unruly sea.
We wonder what
we are going to find at Recife, our next stop, and the omens are not good if
their crime statistics are to be believed - and Im sure they are - if
not even rosetinted! Roll on the Caribbean. Joan is now with for
our time in Brazil and Bob whisked her off to Rio whilst the tour was in
progress - on all accounts that is a bit more up market than Salvador
and Recife.
Andante is going well - touch wood - and crew
morale in good nick.
Love/best regards as appropriate. Keith Ann and the rest.
