Mairmade - Day#12

Day#12 - Rest Day

When I wrote the update yesterday at around 10pm UTC, we had just passed by or through (don't remember which) a squall, I was hoping that was the last for the night... Well apparently the fingers crossed emoji doesn't work on squalls 🙄. We got hammered all night with squall after squall. Many we dodged, some we ran into, others blew up around us. Nightwatch schedule went out the window, and not much sleep was had by anyone.

As the sun came up we got hit again, but fortunately the next couple we were able to dodge, and by midday today squall activity had subsided. We were exhausted.

On the upside the wind (when there wasn't squalls around) was great, blowing a nice steady 11-14 knots, just aft of the beam, which let us run 7-8 knots of boat speed much of the day. Chloe would have had a blast out there today too, but none of us had the energy to take her out. We mostly just rested; dryed all the wet
clothes/cushions/everything in the sun, and a couple of good meals; tortilla wrapped sausage for lunch, and spaghetti Bolognese for dinner.

None of our crew had experience with squalls, and we could have definitely handled things better, but we're also quick learners (out of necessity), and we successfully dodged a couple of squalls this evening. The radar is quiet now, and we're hoping it stays that way tonight.

On the sailings deets: We continue to make nice steady progress with another 24-hour distance covered of 174nm, although due to the squalls one or two of those miles was in the wrong direction 🤣. Check out this screen shot of our chartplotter from 4am this morning!

Our straight line distance to St. Lucia is now less than 1000nm! We're currently heading down to 14°N 48°W from where we'll chart our course due West to St. Lucia. This is due to a massive wind hole (no wind) that is opening up over the Atlantic East of the Caribbean.
We'll also likely join back up with much of the ARC fleet at 14°N, so that'll be fun.

That's all for now. Time to sleep.
