Into The Mystic - Day 5 Thanksgiving

120 miles north of the Cape Verde islands

We have just made the turn to the West and the Caribbean now lies directly ahead of us some 2000nm left to run.

We have a fridge and freezer stuffed with fish - 4 Mahi Mahi and 1 large Tuna so far. Henry caught the first Mahi and then Brad reeled in the tuna - Simon wasn’t strong enough. What a whopper ! We have eaten tuna steaks, tunas sashimi (Jodi had the foresight to pack soy and wasabi) and ahi poke bowls and we still have about half of it left - from sea to plate in less than 2 hours - wow.

Tony continues to hobble about the boat, poor guy, hopefully his ankle is healing but it’s a slow process.

The winds were not kind to us yesterday - either too much or too little, or from the wrong direction and we gave up a number of places in the race (sorry rally). We sauntered rather than sailed  and watched the other boats passing us virtually on AIS. We did see one beautiful big boat fly past us, Cloudy Bay, a CNB 76, we exchanged a quick greeting over the VHF radio and then waved them goodbye. We suspect that may be the last boat we will see for some time as the fleet has now dispersed across the Atlantic.

Apart from catching and eating sea-life aplenty we have seen loads too : we have had two large pods of dolphins come and play in our bow wave, we have seen sea turtles, whales and even a shark.

Happy Thanksgiving to our American friends - we had fish tacos, not very appropriate but absolutely the right call given our fish stocks onboard…….

It feels like the Tradewinds proper are about to kick in which should speed us on our way. We know that many of the boats a way behind us are struggling to find enough wind but we have plenty - 12.5kts and rising -  and we are presently cruising along at 8.2 knots. We have just passed the 750 miles completed marker.

Its a good life
