Makara of Exe - At sea with 4 old men

After 13 days at sea with 4 expert seamen, I can't understand why they haven't worked out how to get this boat to go in the right direction. I have had to put up with endless conversations about wind direction, 'getting south' and the bloody rhum line (all I can say is I hope the rum line is as fun as it sounds). Throughout all of these debates all that I ask is that they keep the sunshine on me and not block it with the sails.

There was excitement yesterday when a whale breached right next to the boat. My excitement then turned to fear when Ian recounted his earlier radio conversation with another non-ARC boat that had hit a whale, lost its rudder and was taking on water. Thankfully, our whale was very friendly and just popped up alongside a few times then disappeared.

I could never have imagined the vastness of this ocean and the number of stars in the night sky - some nights there appears to be more stars up there than black space.

It's amazing how much wildlife there is out here, and particularly flying fish. We have had about 20 on deck and 3 have found their way into the boat through the hatches.....and they stink! I have also learnt lots about the boat (mostly how much stuff breaks) - all of which I will never forget.

It has been a trip of a lifetime.
