Danica I - Danica Blog Entry January 27, 2018

Trans-Atlantic Passage - November 25- Las Palmas to Rodney Bay
Day 1- Sunday, November 25, 2018
¢ A very busy morning. Enjoying my last cappuccino in the crowded Sailor's Bar.
¢ 11:00 Boats untying their moorings and exiting the Las Palmas Marina- lively music playing in the background reminding us that this was a memorable week filled with fond memories of friends, food, entertainment and amazing firework display last night
¢ Very crowded in the bay, boats waiting for the start, anxiety running high
¢ 12:30 Crossed the start line at Las Palmas
¢ Wind 13 knots/6.5-8 knots/ Danica has raised the spinnaker and main
¢ Sunny day, fairly calm seas, most boats are using colourful spinnakers or wing-on -wing. Beautiful Malta flagged yacht passed us by. Captured in a photo…
¢ 16:30 - Sail Change to genoa and main - one reef
¢ 20:00 - winds are dropping to 3-4 knots
o S/V ITHAKA - #156 - Port
o S/V RARITAN - #35 - Port
¢ Danica is sailing very slowly because we were too close to the Island of Gran Canaria despite adequate warnings in the pre-start briefings - however, the view is amazing: full moon, calm seas, canvas of lights on the Island's shore and another canvas of lights from the sky blending with the sailing lights of the ARC 2018 boats.
Day 2- Monday, November 26, 2018
¢ 02:00 - 04:00 - Mary's watch
o light winds - 3-4 knots. Using main and genoa- slow sailing, full moon
o 75NM from Las Palmas
o 02:45 - S/V VENUS #92 on our starboard
¢ 08:00 - winds 10-12 knots, sail change- Glen and Don added Code 0
o S/V NJORD of GOTHENBURG #95 on port
o S/V HULLABALOO #146 on port
o 105 NM from Las Palmas
o Pod of dolphins came to play with Danica - two bows can accommodate a decent dolphin party
