Lexington - Captain Bob: Reunion
We are about 10 miles from the marina in Reunion. We have had mixed weather. We did motor some but had fair winds for a good portion of the 135 mile trip. It is amazing the efforts taken by islands and or countries to protect there boarders. We were called last night by the coast guard about 50 miles out. A plane just flew over ( about 10 miles from the marina) and circled behind us. The did not contact us on radio. On several occasions far off the Australian coast we were contacted by Australian planes by radio confirming our identity. When we were in Christmas Island and Cocos Keeling there were large boats with about 25 personnel patrolling up and down the coast. Christmas Island actually had a prison for illegal immigrants for all of Australia. I think the Australian government tries to intercept illegal immigrants fairly far off the coast and turn them back if the are in a safe vessel. I think they may even give them fuel and water to make it back. I wonder if it works.
Most of the Australian boarder patrols had wrist bands with WWDTD on them. They were in all different colors. The letters were big and gold leaf.
We are in the marina now. It is a very basic marina from which to base our touring and exploring. We have rented a car and will drive around the island following the tour maps. It will be similar to other islands but we will have almost a week and few boat repairs. The island is French so the food will probably be very good.
If I got you interested, WWDTD stands for what would Donald Trump do. Just trying to add a little humor!
May fair winds fill your sails with smarter wrist bands.
Bob
