One Hundred and Eighty!
Even the mighty Eric would be proud of us. For the first time since
we were in the Agulas Current off the west coast of South Africa, we have topped
the elusive 180 miles in a day. This total was reached with the help of
the Guiana Current. In theory, Cleone should be capable of making such a total
solely by her own efforts, but despite trying we have yet to do so. We all
live in hope! Keeping in the current has much occupied our thoughts
today. Some of the other yachts have been reporting counter-currents and
cross-currents, and we have scratched our heads as to how to avoid them.
But we will probably just continue on our way, making for the prosaically named
Scarborough in Tobago. We've less than 400 miles to go.
Survival rations again last night - the fish are still elusive and the
Skipper was cooking. And for those of you who remember Bernard the Booby;
he obviously put a notice in the Holiday Lets section of the Bird Times.
We have had an overnight lodger for the last four days, maybe a Sooty Tern, but
it's hard to tell in the dark. He's as mucky as Bernard, and no doubt the
Spreaders will be showing signs of his occupancy. Another trip up the mast
for the Skipper!
Meanwhile, all is well with us, and very best wishes to you all.
