After the adrenaline-spiking adventure of "mission save the turtles" yesterday the crew of Champagne Hippy were ready for some well-earned rest.
The AC unfortunately is still not working meaning most of us have been struggling to sleep with the heat. However, with the sea state being fairly calm it has provided an opportunity to crack the cabin hatches and welcome in some much-needed breeze. Last night however, we found out it was not just the waves we needed to be worried about with the hatches open as there were some unexpected guests in two of our cabins.
The first arrived onto the hatch blind in Julia’s cabin. She ran up on deck where Josh and I were on our first night watch and exclaimed she thought there may be a fish on her blind but she was too worried to open it in case it fell into her bed. Josh went forward and sure enough, there lay the fish in question, he quickly flung it back into the sea, a lucky escape for Julia! Becca and Matt weren’t so lucky when in the early hours of this morning an eager flying fish dove straight through their hatch and into their bed! As you can imagine flying fish don’t smell the best so it was an immediate change of the duvet and clean-up situation.
With morning watch jobs complete and the boat looking ship shape, the remaining day post the night's fish activity turned out to be very restful, with most crew sunbathing, enjoying music, and playing some more Rumikub.
We were visited twice today by a pod of 10 Atlantic Spotted Dolphins true to their Google description they were playful and acrobatic. They were much smaller than many of the dolphins we have seen thus far on our journey and had a distinctive mottled pattern across their body. They seemed eager and competitive with one another to ride the bow but also lept across the waves with elegance and ease.
We’ve had another successful haul of the spinnaker today which has created a steady speed on average of 8.5 knots. With this then dropped safely just prior to sunset we tucked into a delicious dinner of chicken & chorizo pasta prepared by Becca!
