Jua Kali - The Jua Kali Report - Day 5

Day five brought us a lot more change than day four did.

First it was time to come back down South West towards the trades which meant getting the A5 down and hoisting one of the symmetric spinnakers. Unfortunately the one we hoisted first turned out to have a couple of small tears in (probably from the last time it was dropped) so we brought that down to repair and instead hoisted the red and yellow "dragon" spinnaker.

The wind has been a little confused, not being able to decide if it wanted to be 15 knots or 5 or even from the North or East. This has made for difficult driving and tricky trimming but with a lot of effort and concentration it seems we are nearly back into some consistent pressure.

The afternoon brought our second fish, another beautiful mahi mahi which we marinated for a couple of hours in soy sauce, wasabi, olive oil and white wine among other things to make a great ceviche. (I'm not allowed the reveal the rest of Baptiste's secret recipe.)

A stunning sunset accompanied by small dolphins leaping as high as they could out of the water meant that the crew were in high spirits going into the night.
The night began cloudy and threatened rain squalls that we had managed to avoid during the day but later cleared into another beautiful night of sailing by the stars.

The first light of dawn brought a change in wind direction meaning a pre sunrise gybe to remain on track with the forcast promising more wind behind us later to speed us on our way towards St Lucia.

Pancakes for breakfast and a beautiful sunny day have everyone chatty and cheerful, ready for another day on the water, only catching another fish could improve the mood further!

Quote from the crew: "I know that the North star is somewhere over here" (pointing East).

Signing off for now, this has been Alex Fisher with the Jua Kali Report.
