Paw Paw - Log Day 77: "In Rome..."

Since we eventually got all our domestic chores out of the way and since we didn't need fuel of any kind (which would have been a rather time-consuming exercise of ferry it by dinghy in jerry cans), it was time to go and play.

We started the day off with a ride into town to visit the Paul Gauguin Art Museum, which apperared to be closed, but the doors were unlocked, so we wondered around anyway. From there we visited his gravesite, perched high on the hillside with spectacular views overlooking Atuona. It was here, inside a wall that surrounded one of the graves, that Roy spotted a hen and her chicks which were unable to get out of the confined area in order to eat. Roy, with baguettes tucked under his arm that were purchased earlier, decided to feed them - a gesture that is so typical of Roy's giving nature and one the hen and chicks were very grateful for. The symbolism of the scene, however, did not escape Elaine, given that it was Easter.

After a quick a pitstop to check emails etc at the local cyber cafe, we took a stroll back to the anchorage. En route Elaine spotted some local children swimming in a rock pool of the river we cross, so she decided to cool off and join them much to their delight. Later that evening we enjoyed an Easter Service at St Anne's Catholic Church which was the most unsual service we have participated in.

Our night was topped off with a Happy Hour to say cheerio to our cruising friends as we set sail for Fatu Hiva in the morning and probably won't see most of them until Tahiti, since we plan to stay in the Marquesas longer the WARC schedule denotes.
