Lionessa Of Douglas - Day One. The Start.

Sunday 21st Nov 2010

Woke up to murky skies and drizzle!Off the dock at 1030 accompanied by a brass band and DJ Don Pedro on the Mic wishing all the boats bon voyage as they pass his fuel dock. Top Chap.

Motored out of the marina to start area and raised sails. Near disaster as Guardia Civil Launch nearly reversed into us as the sails were going up. Disaster averted through foghorn and a lot of shouting, followed by much relieved laughter!!!

Went for a 'yot' to familiarise those new to Lionessa with tacking, gybing and reefing.

The start was highly comical with yachts going in all directions and with so many boats in the start area, it was difficult to even see the start line. We opted to go with the Genoa until we cleared the line, but this lasted for only a full 30 seconds after the start signal and then enthusiasm got the better of sense and up went the Red Gennaker and the Suomi Lejiona was off, heading south at 10 knots.

Great first days sail under Gennaker. Mike on the wheel the whole time and obviously enjoying himself. The rest of the crew enjoying the atmosphere and in good spirits.

We were all interested to see who out of the race boats was going to be hard enough to gybe off to the west and the Rhumb line route as we neared the bottom of Gran Canaria. Given the forcast of strong low pressures, headwinds and high seas along this route for the first week, we had
already decided the day before we would let the men be men whilst us 'boys' headed south for a bit of fun and sun!

Surprisingly few of the race boats ahead took the Rhumb line option despite it offering the shortest distance to St Lucia and we found ourselves at the back of a leading pack heading south in amongst the majority of the race boats, including the legendary Steinlager II.

Started the watch routine at 1800 hrs, trimmed the kite for the nights expected wind angle and course, had dinner and sundowners; and then settled into the routine. St Lucia, here we come!
