Destination Grenada – Bound for the Spice of the Caribbean

ARC+ participants have a real treat in store after their ocean crossing, arriving in beautiful island of Grenada. They will be greeted by the welcoming staff at Camper & Nicholsons Port Louis Marina and the WCC yellowshirt team, then, after the sails are stowed and the decks washed, they can stretch their land-legs exploring the many delights of the island. Amongst the highlights are 40 white sandy beaches including the world-famous Grand Anse Beach, 15 breath-taking waterfalls, 5 chocolate factories, 3 rum distilleries, and more than 30 unforgettable dive sites.

Caribbean cruising gurus Chris Doyle and Lexi Fisher are the authority for providing guidance for cruising sailors arriving in the islands to make the most of the season through their series of informative guides (http://doyleguides.com), and here they introduce what Grenada has in store for ARC+ participants when they make landfall.

"Grenada, a spectacularly beautiful island, has lush green mountains, crystal waterfalls, golden beaches, and fragrant spice trees that give the island its epithet: Isle of Spice. Come from late January to early March to get the added bonus of seeing the hills ablaze with hundreds of bright orange, flowering immortelle trees. This is pure magic.

Few islands are as photogenic as Grenada, with mountains, rivers, rainforest, and houses surrounded by flowers. Sometimes, when you are hiking along a river amid nutmeg trees, it has an uncanny resemblance to early pictures of the Garden of Eden. A swim in one of the waterfalls will leave you feeling wonderfully refreshed, with your hair and skin feeling extra soft. Concord Falls are in beautiful countryside and anyone with a spark of adventure should hike the extra half-hour to the upper falls. Seven Sisters Falls are the best, a lovely one-hour hike. You need a guide if you want to make it to Honeymoon Falls, another half-hour from Seven Sisters. Many of the falls are on private land and the owners levy a small charge.

From a yachting point of view Grenada has developed rapidly. Haulout facilities are found in St. David’s, Prickly Bay, and Clarkes Court Bay. There are Marina facilities in St. George’s, Clarkes Court Bay, Prickly Bay, Le Phare Bleu Bay, and Mt. Hartman Bay. St. George’s has the big state-of-the-art Camper and Nicholson Port Louis marina, as well as The Yacht Club. Three big chandleries supply yachting gear, and The Yachting Act legislation allows for low-duty supplies, parts, and chandlery.

We have worked alongside the Marine and Yachting Association of Grenada on an exciting new project for this season and have produced a stand-alone guide to yachting and watersports in Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique. Thanks to our advertisers and sponsorship from the Grenada Tourism Authority the guide is available free and will be presented to ARC+ participants on arrival as a printed book, and an online version is available at http://doyleguides.com/grenada/ We’ve compiled this in-depth guide with all the useful charts and information on navigation, marinas, and services our readers are used to, plus expanded sections on snorkeling and diving, environmental concerns, and giving back to the community. Chris and I (Lexi) will be updating the entire Windwards guide this season (to be available November 2023) and you can follow our adventures on Instagram @doyleguides."

Grenada is also gearing up for a return to the full week-long schedule of events for Grenada Sailing Week, Jan 29th - Feb 3rd. With 9 boats already registered (one of which is an ARC+ participant, Assuage) and a range of races including around Carriacou, passage from Carriacou to Grenada, and then some shorter races off Grenada's coast, it will be a great opportunity for ARC+ participants to get a taste of the Caribbean regatta scene. Grenada Sailing Week is known for its friendly competition, and more info can be found on the Grenada Sailing Week website. Captains can register here directly through Yachtscoring. Regular updates are posted through social media; Grenada Sailing Week on Facebook and @grenadasailingweek on Instagram.
