They say you should always leave the best until last, and there is no doubt that the best party of the Classic Malts Cruise is always the final ceilidh at the Lagavulin Distillery on Islay. Whether it is the fine single malt whisky, the isolated location, the superb seafood buffet, the music and dancing, or just the company of so many enthusiastic cruising sailors that makes the party special we cannot say. But, what ever the ingredients, the mix was enjoyed by all the cruisers who reached Lagavulin for the final stage of the Classic Malts Cruise 2007.

It was an evening of whirling arms and spinning bodies as the crews, distillery staff and guests took to the dance floor with a passion at the Talisker Ceilidh. Marking the mid point of the Cruise, and the furthest north the boats will sail, it was a marvellous mixture of music, dancing and of course, fine single malt whisky.

The 14th Edition of the Classic Malts Cruise started on Saturday evening with a superb buffet supper and music in the courtyard of Oban distillery.

Cruisers have travelled from literally all over the world to take part in this year’s Classic Malts; “Restless of Auckland” from New Zealand and “Eloise” from the USA join yachts from a total of 12 nations. With a full turnout at the Oban party, first-timers were able to swap stories with the strong contingent of familiar faces; Mogens and Kamma Termansen in their yacht “Pinafore” join us for the 5th consecutive year. Chris and Anna Brooke more usually associated with RORC and racing are taking part in the cruise for the first time sailing their yacht “Insanity” having brought her up to the West Coast earlier this year.

United by a passion for sailing, scenery and single malt whisky, almost 400 sailors on some 94 yachts are expected in Oban for the 14th annual Classic Malts Cruise, a 200 mile voyage through the Inner Hebrides this July. The cruisers choose their own route from Oban to Skye, and back south to Islay, meeting up at each of the three coastal Classic Malts distilleries, to be welcomed ashore as guests of the distilleries, for buffets, music, dancing and, of course, for a chance to meet those whose lives are spent making Scotland's finest whisky.

OBAN

Oban distillery, founded in 1794, is at the heart of Oban - the "Gateway to the Isles". Fine single malt whisky has been made here for over 200 years in one of the oldest licensed distilleries, its stills among the smallest in Scotland.

TALISKER

Talisker is the home to a powerful malt of rare distinction. Here, lodged far from any neighbour in the small coast community of Carbost at the head of Loch Harport, is one of the finest yet most remote distilleries of all.

LAGAVULIN

Lagavulin is the definitive Islay malt, from the ancestral home of the Lords of the Isles who long ago ruled much of what became Scotland
