Sail Number 2281

In 1936, undoubtedly influenced greatly by the success of William Fife & Sons located 30 miles away in Fairly and the numerous busy ship building yards of the Clyde, Bill Campbell set about designing the 3rd Cruinneag.

For 75 years Cruinneag III has sailed mostly in the Clyde with some trips to the Mediterranean. She is still in incredibly good condition with mostly original features thanks to a stream of loving owners over the years.

She has spent the last year in the Mediterranean taking part in the Classic Yacht Regatta circuit and is now ready for her first transatlantic.

She is build almost entirely of teak and still has her original hull (teak planking on oak), deck, hatches/deckhouses also teak and her spruce masts. Inside her interior is mahogony cabinetry complemented with rich reds and thick tartan carpets keeping with her Scottish heritage.

Nick the skipper first appeared on the crew list in 1966 aged 6 months!! Now that's an experienced skipper!

Cruinneag III - Feeling Hot Hot Hot

Thursday 8th December 2011 13:33:41N 56:30:35W TOAST TO THE LASSIES - Trevor Watson, 6th december 2011I only realised when the Gardner first grumbles Into life in Las Palmas that - Guys! We're Outnumbered! Four solid fellows with stout hearts of oak Who inject, drink, ingest and pretend not to smoke About to set sail across the rolling Atlantic All eager and willing and a tiny bit frantic. Our skipper is Nick, full of resource and cheer Then there's Trevor who likes motorboats and drinks lots of beer Steve's got his own yacht so is a useful Jack Tor And Raman who's talent's wasted when not running a bar A sound group of lads although it would seem They wouldn't get started without the ladies in the team.Mother Nature herself provides both wind and ocean And Susan the pharmacist mixes. read more...

Cruinneag III - Tropical Rains, Tropical Calms and who ate all the sausages!!

Tuesday 6th December 2011 13:40:50N 51:40:90W So an eventful weekend for the intrepid adventurers aboard the Cruinneag 3 as we as we continue to battle the winds and waves as we head closer and closer to our final destination to St. lucia. all hope of calm seas and t shirt and shorts weather were dashed as the crew had to don oilskins in order to brave the elements with onset of some stormy tropical weather, well that is everyone bar Trevor who decided oilskins are for pansy southerners, and that he gets worse weather then this in his back garden in scotland! so to add to our torment we have had to witness Trev running around the decks wearing nothing more then a pair of shorts and his life jacket for the past three days, which while generally bearable, becomes  is a little. read more...

Cruinneag III - Weather weather and more weather...

Saturday 3rd December 2011 15:14:00N 43:47:00WWe're on day 3 of the Advent calendar and are feeling quite festive after a visit from Balthazar, following a star, at happy hour on Thursday night courtesy of Susan. Gold (Lemon), Frankinsence (Gin) and Mhyrr (Tonic) all round and a festive game of pub quiz with retro sweeties (think sherbert dips and refreshers) for prizes. Lots of fun indeed. And a good chill out after a long night the night before...Wednesday night on mine and Trevors watch (everything happens on my and Trevors watch!) the wind started to creep up into the mid 20 knot range...no problem...27...ok...30...gulp...but the 43 year old sail, as yet untested, held on...and held on...unfortunatley the Red Baron was just too good for poor Otto Helms in the lazarette who couldn't. read more...

Cruinneag III - Matelots Diary

Sunday 27th November 18:30:51N 29:22:69WIn all my 25 years before the mast, I've never crewed on a ship where they work you as hard as on Cruinneag III. The crew have to turn to with the Dyson every morning before we've even had our latte and pan au chocolate. One man forgot to take the filter paper out of the coffee machine yesterday and was sentenced to 15 licks of the cat. He coughed up a furrball this afternoon and is feeling much better now. After that excitement we attended a lecture from Karen on foredeck drills as we wanted to put the sails up for photos. Thursday night was Raman's Happy Hour, 'Rum'ns Carribean Bar' - "you can drink whatever you want as long as it's got Rum in it!". Day 6 - Susan 'Aligator Aberdeen's' Happy Hour 'The Billabong Bar' served us Kangaroo punch. A. read more...
