Group 2 yachts restart from Bora Bora

Group 2 yachts restart from Bora Bora
Wednesday, 19 May 2010

There was light to good wind at midday today as Group 2 of the World ARC fleet restarted from Bora Bora on the next leg of their around-the-world passage. The next leg, Leg 7, is a nearly 1400 nautical miles passage to the Kingdom of Tonga, stopping at the deserted atoll of Suwarrow and the big rock of Niue of the way. The group which departed today are following in the wake of group 1, who left from Bora Bora on Sunday.

At the head of the fleet as the boats went through the pass at Bora Bora were Ciao and A Lady. The Sweden Yacht 42, Ciao, owned by Srecko and Olga Pust were trading first position with the Stephen Hyde on A Lady. Perhaps both yachts were still in the competitive groove, having taken part in the Tahiti Pearl Regatta in the preceding 4 days. In fact, Ciao not only competed but was the overall winner in their class for the whole event. The World ARC fleet were very proud of their achievements. Very well done!

Slightly further behind, the main body of the fleet rounded the port lateral mark of the Bora Bora pass and set downwing sails for Suwarrow. The catamaran Noeluna, despite arriving in the starting area late, was the first to set their spinnaker and very soon many more boats had done the same. Indeed it was a very colourful sight as the fleet disappeared over the horizon.

Some of the World ARC fleet chose not to visit Suwarrow and will either visit Raratonga in the Cook Islands or delay in Bora Bora and meet the fleet in Niue. The boats are expected in Niue from Friday, 28 May.
