Champagne Hippy - Day 3 - 21st November

An all-around grey day out in the Atlantic today. We sailed through some dusty weather last night which has landed what feels like half a desert on our capping rails. Something for us all to look forward to cleaning at some point…

We took an hour to make tea this morning on our first watch as the generator and inverter decided to play games with us. No caffeine = not a happy crew (first-world problems I know!)

The day progressed and the fog lifted somewhat, however, it was grey overall with a slight splattering of light showers. The crew has taken today slowly with many catching up on much-needed sleep that was lost in preparation for the voyage.

We have had some excitement on the fishing line today, with not one but two Mahi Mahi caught!! The first was by green crew member Jonnie, a decent size which we decided to keep and taste this evening. The second was by chief baker Becca who reeled in a slightly smaller but equally as beautiful fish, which we threw back. Captain Josh has a rule that if one’s in the fridge then anything else goes back!

We’ve seen many flying fish today and also two crickets which have left us wondering if they were blown in with last night's winds or were they in fact stowaways from Las Palmas?!

In the evenings we gather as a crew and catch up on the days watch’s and have dinner together. This evening we broke out the games including Rumikub, a firm Sanders family favourite however we tried not to get too competitive with those new to the game. As things stand Gi is in the lead.

We managed to catch two breaches of a large whale again off our port side this early evening! What a sight to behold, again not close enough to see fins or tails but a pinch-me moment for sure!

As I’m writing this blog sat at the starboard helm with the gentle (for now) waves rolling underneath, there are delicious smells wafting up from the galley where captain Josh is making some Mahi Mahi bights and for mains his “famous” chicken tray bake. If it tastes how it smells we are in for a treat tonight! A review to follow tomorrow…
