Firefly - Passage to Moorea

Our night crossing proved quite eventful but generally lacking in wind. We managed a few hours of sailing interspersed will long periods of motoring. David saw the moon rise and it was red in colour; we were forewarned of this rare phenomenon by one of our dive instructors in Rangiroa. The watches were also interrupted by lightning flashes and rain showers so a memorable night all round!

Shortly after daybreak we Tahiti came in to view and then just off our track the small and only atol in the Windward Islands called Teti'aroa this is famous for being bought by Marlon Brando after filming Mutiny on the Bounty in Tahiti. There are no passes into the atoll's lagoon and this has help keep its almost unique biodiversity. We have read that there is an eco- resort planned here to be called 'The Brando'. After passing Teti'aroa Moorea appeared from behind the clouds some 30 miles away.

We have decided to head for Bai D'Opunohu on the North Coast, with a little more breeze filling in we have hoisted the big yellow and white parasailor spinnaker and we hope to be at anchor before dark.

Paul, David and Peter
