Two Fish - Sailing sailing

Date: June 23, 2015 at 9:30:42 AM EDT

Heading out to sea today. It's a 2-3 hour motor out of the river. We got a late start because we "slept in" until 6:30 am. Almost all the other sailors left around dawn. We will be grateful for those 2 extra hours of sleep during our overnight watches this evening.

The exit out of the Chesapeake Bay is very very busy with commercial boat traffic, tugs & barges, and battleships. LOTS of battleships, huge ones with big guns and the right of way. We've even seen a submarine-- unsubmerged of course. There are lots of Navy police vessels with machine guns and 18-year-olds at the helm to make sure we don't get too close to something that were not supposed to.

There is a huge wide channel that all the ships follow as they enter and leave this area. But when one comes up behind you at 20knots, it's as though they span the ENTIRE channel so we hug one side or the other to stay out of their way.

We are supposed to have winds out of the SW today and tonight which should make for a lovely sail up the coast of Maryland. We anticipate being 5 to 15 miles from land so sorry should be brilliant tonight

More later.

Date: June 22, 2015, at 8:07 PM,

Ahoy friends,
TwoFish and her captains and crew arrived safely in Portsmouth Virginia at approximately 9 AM this morning. We averaged 8 knots the whole way down until we slowed the boat down overnight to 4 knots so we wouldn't arrive too early. (Sorry Fogger. It's true.)
The sail was perfect. Brisk winds, clear skies, and a beautiful view of the Milky Way. There were Dolphins, a square-rigged tall ship (the STS Pitcon Castle) and lighthouses along the way. Also saw a Carnival Cruise ship heading south for their own adventures. We were invaded by a slew of black flies along the way and they are still here. Fly tape and swatters are out.
Today we explored downtown Portsmouth. Not much to see, except of course, a port and a lot of big military ships. It's at Mile Marker #1 of the Intercostal Waterway so the end of this leg of our own journey is also the start of lots of other boaters' adventures.
Heading out to sea tomorrow. Should arrive in Cape May, NJ on Wednesday. More later.

Ahoy all,
Howard and I are crewing aboard the sailing vessel TwoFish with our friends Paula and George Hefner. Over the next week we are sailing around the DelMarVa peninsula. If you'd like to track our progress you can go to the below link and find us there. We will be making 3 to 4 stops at marinas on the way so if we are not moving that is probably why. We should have cell service most of the time so if you need to call or email feel free.
