"If you sail to Horta and don't visit Peter you don't really know Horta."

Originally called the Casa Azores the café was opened at the end of the 19th century by Ernesto Azevendo as a handicraft shop, but gradually began selling drinks too - in particular gin & tonics favoured by the British.

More often than not the welcome call of 'land ahoy' when approaching the Azores will mean that the island of Pico has been sighted. The volcanic peak is a prominent landmark and often the first sight of land visible from many miles offshore. Although landfall for the ARC Europe fleet is planned in Faial, Pico is only 4 nautical miles away and well worth taking the 25 minute ferry ride which will bring you across to the second largest island of the Azores.

Powdery white-sand beaches, lush green mountains, and a sheltered yacht-filled harbour characterize the island of Tortola. Tortola is the largest and most populated of the British Virgin Islands, a group of islands which form part of the archipelago of the Virgin Islands. Local belief is that the name was originally given to the island by Christopher Columbus, meaning 'Land of the Turtle Dove', though Columbus actually named the island 'Santa Ana'. The Dutch settled, and dubbed it Tor Tholen (New Tholen), after a tiny island off the west coast of the Netherlands. When the British moved in they altered the name to its present day form of Tortola.

All of the yachts that are participating in the event will have to have a Safety Equipment Inspection before the start of the rally. This aims to achieve a number of different outcomes. The first is that we know that all the equipment needed in an emergency is onboard; the second is to make sure that it is at the top of lockers and people know where their own equipment is. The final reason is that the safety officers have a wealth of knowledge and have been on many boats and can pass on any hints and tips they have picked up over the years. Read about the Safety Equipment Inspections here.
