Destiny - Log Day 13: Life at Sea - plates or bowls?

Distance sailed from Gran Canaria: 2150nm
Rhumb line distance to go: 830nm

Dear Family and Friends,

We are having a great time out here on Destiny! We continue to set our own records for distance in 24 hours. As of 10:00 this morning, we had sailed 217 miles in the past 24 hours. Very favourable winds yesterday and through the night have pushed us well en route. Boat speeds registered in the 9 to 11 knot range, and surfing down one wave had Graeme got us up to 14.8 and several 13's!

Mid afternoon yesterday also saw us pass another nautical mile stone … we passed the "1000 miles to go" mark and thus are setting our sites on arrival in St. Lucia. We have a lottery going as to our arrival time, which thus keep us debating which sail(s) should be up or down etc in hopes of altering the time of arrival. Of course, if we hit the dreaded doldrums and have to start the engine the times will be all off as we can't motor as fast as we can sail.

Speaking of the engine, we haven't had it on since 1210 on Sun the 20th, just prior to crossing the start line! Of course the generator runs daily for a couple of hours to charge the batteries to power the boat.

Depending on the amount of motion of the boat on each day, Lynley will often stick her head up the companionway about 1700 and say "plates or bowls?". She is referring to dinner, and if we would like to use plates and open up the table in the cockpit, or use bowls that are pre-plated in the galley. Bowls tend to be the preferred method with the swell motion as it is easier to hold and less risk of a meal being dumped on the floor!

Regards to all,
Jim (Graeme, Nelson, Matt, Lynley, Skip)
