Indaba - Porto to Lagos

INDABA'S BLOG
DATE FROM TO         DIST(NM) TIME(Hrs) SPEED (kn)
Crew change at Porto where Alex, Chris & Charlie left and Noreen, Jenness, Anne & Jeff arrived. Our first Portuguese meal for 5 cost us just 35 Euros including 1.5 litres of wine.
Leixoes (Porto) to Lagos trip was littered with pot markers, many of which had no poles or flags, particularly near harbour entrances.

3.8.11 Leixoes (Porto) Aveiro 30.5 6.1 5.0
Light winds meant we only sailed for 1 hour or so. Anchored near military base where we were regaled with bugle calls in the evening and early morning.

4.8.11 Aveiro Figueira da Foz 30.0 5.75 5.2
Motored all day

5.8.11 Figueira da Foz Nazare 32.6 6.7 4.9
Visibility poor virtually all the way. Wind no better. Practised using radar.

6.8.11 Nazare Peniche 23.5 5.0 4.7
Poor visibility and wind on nose meant more motoring and radar practise.

7.8.11 A day in Peniche during the festival of Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem which takes place yearly over the first week-end in August and includes harbour processions and blessing of the fishing fleet – all happening near INDABA. Fireworks and concerts late into the night.

8.8.11 Peniche Cascais 40.0 8.0 5.0
At last had a good day's sail under the genoa starting with F4/5 which increased to F7 after Cabo Roca.

9 & 10 August
Two days in Cascais with the America's Cup teams: The best sailors; the fastest boats; the most money!!!
Ken & Noreen visited Cabo Roca for morning coffee and Sintra for lunch.

11.8.11 Cascais Portinho de Arrabida 32.9 6.5 5.0
Sailed most of the way under full main and genoa. As the wind died in the late afternoon we motored towards Troia before opting for Portugal's most scenic anchorage into which we had to very carefully pick our way. After dinner the amazingly warm wind steadily increased to 30 knots for no explicable reason, so we let out more chain than normal. As the boat swung the anchor alarm went at 00:20 by which time the wind was moderating and 07:15 when it was almost calm.

12.8.11 Portinho de Arrabida to Sines 31.9 6.0 5.3
No wind so motored again!!! Visited by a large pod of dolphins for what seemed like 30 mins.

13.8.11 Sines to Lagos 72.31 15.0 4.8
Set off and were sailing very soon but the wind was very fickle so we were motoring and sailing alternatively throughout the night. Dolphins came out to play at 02:25!!! As we rounded the corner at Cabo de Sao Vicente the wind died and then picked up again and strengthened as we rounded Ponta de Sagres. Thus we reached Lagos, whence we plan to depart for Madeira Tues 16 August.
