N 26 37 W 18 12
Approximately 190 nm southwest of the Canary Islands

We had an exciting start to the ARC yesterday.  We were seen off by a brass band (which marched right down every dock playing for the sailors), a fire fighting tug (spraying water into the sky) and crowds of well-wishers.  It was quite a sight.  We sailed 160 nm yesterday in trade winds ranging from 18-25 knots.  The wind strengths have presented some challenges.  We have a parasailor we affectionately call 'the beast'.  Today in 20 knots true wind the beast became self-aware and realising that it was indeed a beast it began tearing apart the boat.  First a broken snatch block, then two bent stauncions.  We finally got the beast down and licking our wounds, admitted the score was beast one, walkabout II crew zero.  Tomorrow promises lighter winds so we'll return to show this thing who's boss (albeit in the lighter wind ranges).  The parasailor is quite a sight.  It's an enormous sail with a paraglider type slot built right into the centre.  When it opens this slot fills and rides forward of the sail like a wing.  Supposedly it gives us lift, but as of yet it's only given us a whooping.

Patrick has continued turning out wonderful meals.  He had hoped for some salmon, tuna or wahoo to work with, but we seem to be challenged when it comes to fishing.  Not to worry, there's plenty of time yet.  Patrick is feeling a bit off today.  It kind of worries you when the cook feels sick, but he's still cooking.  What a trooper.

We have started a lottery to see who can pick (to the closest) the number of nautical miles we'll end up sailing and how many days, hours and minutes will have elapsed before we arrive in St. Lucia.  If you'd like to join the lottery send money (don't worry about the actual pick just send money).  Just kidding, send your picks to Filomena Sousa, my lovely wife, and she'll send us an e-mail next week with your estimates.

Best wishes to all from the Walkabout II crew
