Ula - Day 9 - 2nd December - Becalmed

The wind came! The sails went up! We used a spinnaker seldom used, the large asymetric. Its huge, and very stable. We cruised easily at 9 to 10 knots!

To recap the history of this spinnaker. We used it at the start of ARC 2011, for half an hour. We then hoisted it as we repaired Boris after he was dunked. After approx. 1 hour, it shredded itself and fell into the ocean. We made comments such as “the one that lost its head”, and “the one that is in a bag that we are forgetting about”. We later had it repaired and improved.

This morning, at 0300, in 17 knots of breeze, it parted. Two large pieces of flapping multi-coloured spinnaker material – no longer a sail. It was all held together only by the luff rope (incidentally this was the improvement after ARC 2011).

It was up for 5 hours, and it was a record! Thats all I have to say about this spinnaker in ARC 2013. Its back in its bag, again being forgotten.

Today we sail under all white canvas. Its too early to be losing spinnakers.
