George - I Got a Big One

I would like to claim the the biggest fish/Mammal caught! and I would like to dispel the myth that fish don't go for towed generators... this morning we heard a big puff of air only to find a 20 foot killer whale hanging off the towed generator... I gingerly pulled the generator rope in.. not wanting to piss said whale off any more than I could get away with! it was defiantly a tug of war and I was aware if he really wanted it the 700 lb breaking strain on the generator would snap like cotton.... Bob, as we will call him, came all the way to the sugar scoop... we have the pictures! Bob then circled the boat for a while... before blowing a mist of water over us and disappearing.... TB

OK, I admit the lamb stew was a bit ripe and it was understandable that the crew did not fancy it. If you liked your meat very gamey, then this was the stew for you. No ill effects for me yet tho and I felt I had a duty not to waste the potatoes and carrots. The killer whale right up behind and beside the boat today was a fantastic boost for the crew, as we are all a bit down about the lack of wind and our slow progress because of it. As if that is not enough we've just been informed that there is a weather hole to our west and that it will not clear for 3 or 4 days. On a positive note, we are all smelling lovely and fresh due to being allowed a shower today in order to empty our forward tank of water. Delicious lunch served up by Mick this afternoon, and Roger Whittaker on the stereo, he'll cheer us up won't he!?

Cold and miserable day, temperatures just above freezing, rain, drizzle and snow to follow as the North Easterly winds sweep across. Oops wrong forecast, hot and sunny, light easterly breezes, plenty of opportunity for sunbathing and whale watching. Bread's in the oven and Mick's curry smells good, better get back on deck for another couple of hours lazing before dinner...SN

A killer whale at the very rear of the boat, then rolling over and swimming underneath us. Wow what a moment!! Just going across a small part of the Atlantic which on the chart is only 112m deep. Who needs wind!!! Tim and I had an exciting watch last night taking the spinnaker down in the dark. Moon tonight should make it lighter if we need to repeat it. Just heard today the first boat has finished and broken the record, congratulations to them and well done to everyone involved in that. We think we have just crossed the half way stage today. MN

If any body else would like to see a killer whale up close and personal in its own environment without having to pay hard earned money to some poaching wet and wild sea world company, then just get Cooke Mason to cook up one of his special lamb hot pots the night before and dispense with the middleman and chuck it over the side before you chuck up over the side. It certainly attracted this beauty to the faint aroma of rancid road kill. Poirot, Hastings, Watchman, Cookie et al were speechless. JDR
