Saltair - Citizen Science on Saltair

We are starting to relax and enjoy life at sea! Seth, 11 is in charge of the citizen science experiment from SeaLab and has started taking water samples and reporting data. One of the measures is ORP, Oxydation Reduction Potential, which can assess the health of marine ecosystems. On his first data collection he read a negative number which he did expect. We reached out to the SeaLab WhatsApp group and Emily from SeaLab sent us a great message back with an explanation. A negative reading is a good sign that the ecosystem is working well and healthy!
Here is Emily’s explanation “here is a little explanation that might help to explain -ORP to him: Think of the ocean like a big, busy city, and the ORP is like a score that tells us if this city is more like a clean-up crew (positive ORP) or a sharing community (negative ORP). In Seth's case, his measurements show a negative ORP. This means the ocean water near his boat is like a sharing community. Why? Because there are lots of tiny plants and animals in the water, and they are all working together, sharing tiny particles called electrons. It's like neighbors sharing tools or ingredients for a big dinner. This sharing happens a lot when there are lots of these tiny living things, and they are healthy and doing their normal activities, like making food from sunlight or eating other tiny things in the water. This sharing helps keep the water in a natural, balanced state, just like a friendly neighborhood where everyone helps each other. So, when Seth sees a negative ORP, it's like he's near a part of the ocean where all the tiny ocean life is busy and happy, sharing and living together. It can be a sign that this part of the ocean is like a healthy, bustling underwater neighborhood!”
