Rival 38, built in Southampton 1986/7 and launched 1990. I acquired her in 2005, since when she has taken me across the Atlantic 3 times, the most recent being a solo crossing from the Orwell River on the East Coast. She carries a fully battened mainsail, a large furling genoa, a light weight unhanked genoa, two staysails and a storm jib on a removable inner forestay. She has 4150 Nannidiesel and a fold-up propellor from Bruntons in Clacton in Essex.

Two solar panels, a wind generator and a towed generator are the sources of electricity for topping up three domestic batteries and one starter battery. She carries a Katadyn water maker that produces 2 litres in 12 minutes and a two-burner gas unit with oven.

A Hydrovane self-steering vane is mounted on the transom, which is used under sail, while a power-driven auto helm is used when under power.

Luna Quest - Saturday, 16th April, 2016

Position: 17.04N 61.53W Jolly Harbour, AntiguaDistance run from Rodney Bay, St Lucia: 218 logged milesWe set sail on Tuesday, 12th April for Antigua stopping overnight in Martinique, Dominica, Guadaloupe and then Antigua. We had planned our first stop in Fort de France, Martinique, but seeing it from a good distance completely inundated with rain and at the same time spotting a tiny little sunny anchorage opposite the bay of Fort de France, we decided to drop anchor there and leave first thing in the morning for a 62-mile run to Portsmouth in Dominica. A very light wind helped us on our way, but we could not achieve our minimum speed of 5 knots without the use of the engine. We weighed anchor at 05.30am and were on our way to Portsmouth, Prince Rupert Bay in Dominica, where we arrived at. read more...

Luna Quest - Sunday, 10th April, 2016

Position: 14.04N 60.57WRodney Bay St Lucia Distance run to Marigot Bay: 60 milesOn April 2nd we set sail at the crack of dawn for Marigot Bay in St Lucia, the last official rendezvous before Rodney Bay in St Lucia, where we started on January 10th, 2015. The idea of getting together in Marigot Bay was to organise a sail parade for April 9th with all our decorative international code flags up via Castries to Rodney Bay. The fleet of 14 boats was led by Luna Quest, the smallest boat, in reverse order of size. The last boat was a 64-ft Amel, owned by Germans, but flying the red ensign.Once in Rodney Bay at around noon, a reception had been organised on the pontoon with live percussion music, where copiousamounts of rhum were freely dispensed with plenty of nibbles. A prize-giving dinner was. read more...

Luna Quest - Wednesday, 30th March, 2016

Position: 13.01N 61.14W BEQUIADistance from Carriacou: 39 logged milesOn Thursday, 24th March, at 8.30am we set sail for Union Island (10 miles). Strong trade winds from the East made our passage quite rough, but with the help of the engine, a triple reefed mainsail and the genoa furled, we arrived at 11am. One of the boat boys helped us to an excellent mooring buoy.On Tuesday, 29th March, at 8.30 we set sail for Bequia (29 miles) in fresh easterly trade winds. It was a close reach on one tack and arrived in Admiral's Bay, Bequia, at 13.30, where we were lucky enough to be directed to the last available mooring buoy. Eric. read more...

Luna Quest - 23rd March, 2016

Noon Position: 12.27N 61.29WRun from Grenada: 48 logged milesWe chose yesterday to make the passage from Port Louis in Grenada to Carriacou on a forecast of 15 knots of wind from the East with a little southing in it. We set off at 07.15 from the marina in light rain and had fickle winds all the way up the west coast of Grenada with quite a few squalls giving us winds upto 25 knots and down to 5 knots, but as soon as we were past Grenada, the wind kicked in at around 20 knots from the East with a little northing in it, which sent us north rather than north east towards Carriacou. By 1pm we were level with Carriacou hidden in dense rain. We tacked, but could only make 170 degrees. It took us 4 hours to tack into Tyrrel Bay covering 7.5 miles due east, but at 4pm we could pick up a mooring. read more...
