Wednesday 15th October

RIPPING TIME!

The customs announce that they won't be with us till 13:00 (we have gained 1 ½ hours so it's a long morning), which is OK as Malcy is engineering and cleaning, Ian cleaning and battery checking, Lindsey and myself washing and cleaning. Our new chums set sail about midday and a new yacht 'Intrepid' arrives complete with broken boom and broken tiller!

By the time Dave, the Sergeant and his 'Oppo' had turned up at 13:45 and gone through all the paperwork it was too late to go to Home Island and thence to West Island by ferry. So we went ashore to the beach for a snorkel and a look at the uninhabited Direction Island. Found the famous 'Yachtsman's Shack' complete with damsel in a hammock, who turned out to be Dave's wife! She had been dropped off whilst they visited the 3 yachts! She is an artist and they are on a 3 month posting from Canberra, which she said they didn't like! We saw them the next day on West Island (off duty) holding hands. Obviously not been married long! Nice people!

A barbeque was proposed on the beach, which was subsequently cancelled and in the meantime Ian snorkelled the famous 'RIP', which the rest of us chickened out of as the current looked too strong and the coral too shallow and settled for the waters round the corner. Later as we were talking to the Swiss boat 'Antares Royale' Malcy attempts to launch the dinghy on his own from the beach and gets swamped, which necessitated taking the engine off and 3 of us eventually to turn the dinghy over and get all the water out!

The BBQ was subsequently cancelled and instead Lindsey cooked a delicious meal of salmon and steak (for Malcy), whilst Ian and I sorted out the world over more than a few glasses of wine!
