Tamanaco - tamanaco thoughts from Rodrigue

Tamanaco - fourth day at sea

Hello everyone!

Morgane of Sark - Thursday evening update

Yes, we finally have some pressure in our sails and we are moving in the right direction!! Course over ground is currently 270 degrees and our speed over ground is between 6,5 and 8 knots. So, we are getting closer to Grenada. Yeah!! Last night we changed our sails several times, from main and jip on port side, to butterflying, and back to both on port side. If you see our track, you probably think we were drunk. We had the auto pilot on the wind angle and were either heading toBrazil or to Florida. With a speed between 3,5 and 4,5 knots and a lot of noise from the “flapping” sails. Not that much fun…But, we didn’t want to put the engine on yet as we were still moving forward and we don’t want to use diesel if not needed. We are a bit reluctant to use our gennaker. We had some problems. read more...

Emily Morgan - Day 5 - Give thanks

Todd and Alex, our two Americans on board celebrated Thanksgiving today. Alex, by cooking his first ever Thanksgiving dinner and Todd by being the first on board to hoist the red spinnaker and use the new bowsprit! The day began with a review of the previous night's events. There were two incidents that highlighted recent advances in navigation at sea which have hugely benefited the amateur sailor. One is the AIS (Automatic Identification System). Boats that have this device are alerted when another boat is within a specific radius.Overnight, two ARC boats were in close proximity. Too close for comfort. Each was made aware of the other's presence through a warning light and beep and could then check the CPA (closest point of approach) vis a vis the position, distance and bearing. read more...

Into The Mystic - Day 5 Thanksgiving

120 miles north of the Cape Verde islandsWe have just made the turn to the West and the Caribbean now lies directly ahead of us some 2000nm left to run.We have a fridge and freezer stuffed with fish - 4 Mahi Mahi and 1 large Tuna so far. Henry caught the first Mahi and then Brad reeled in the tuna - Simon wasn’t strong enough. What a whopper ! We have eaten tuna steaks, tunas sashimi (Jodi had the foresight to pack soy and wasabi) and ahi poke bowls and we still have about half of it left - from sea to plate in less than 2 hours - wow.Tony continues to hobble about the boat, poor guy, hopefully his ankle is healing but it’s a slow process. The winds were not kind to us yesterday - either too much or too little, or from the wrong direction and we gave up a number of places in the. read more...

Into The Mystic - Day 4

The day when all the adrenaline has left our bodies and left us very tired. No lines in the water today as freezer is full.We made some great miles yesterday with our Asymmetrical spinnaker up and cruised for 10 hours at around 9.2 knots. As night descended we were treated with some night dolphins and big blue balls of bioluminescence which looked liked glow in the dark jelly fish dancing under the water. It was an intense night as it was our first time ever flying the light wind sails night, ever.We managed to do just fine everyone was safe but the excitement and tension has left the crew in a bit of a daze.Nothing to report as most people are taking it easy reading, napping and watching dowloaded shows. We have about 18 knots of wind and our main sail and Jib up and are doing a more. read more...

Position: 18°30.35 N, 21°57.59 WDatum: 25 novemberTrip: 758 NMTid: 15:15 (Pauline time, WET-1)Hej från oss! Igår. read more...

Yesterday it had been a big sailing day: finally some good wind for the spiiiiiiiiii ;)Sorry for not having posted anything, but all the crew was busy in setting the sails properly and at the end of the day we were satisfied and tired. Pleasure - Day 4 - Good winds

Everything is well on-board. Yesterday, the sailing conditions where excellent. The gennaker was hoisted for more than 24hrs and a top speed of 13.4 knots was recorded. Today, the winds are more or less absent and the plan is to finalize a game of "yatzy" and a first attempt to do some laundry. The chores were then temporarily abandoned to watch a school of dolphins play around the bow.. read more...

Misty Mhor - Mhor Medical Thursday 25th

It got a bit too windy for the kite overnight and as it also veered it was taking us too far north. We dropped it in the dark, which meant all hands on deck! The deck lights worked well but it was still a bit of a trial. We gybed and poled out a reefed genoa until dawn and the wind had abated to a more modest 14 knots, from a high of over 22. Because of the rolling and the excitement we didn’t get much sleep. Breakfast consists of all-bran with honey topped with muesli and fruit. We have containers of milk stashed around the boat and various fruits hanging in nets from any convenient attachment point. Yorkshire tea or ground coffee complete the meal. Yesterday we also had boiled eggs as well. What a treat. Did you know that eggs should be turned once a week to help them keep? Eventually. read more...

Addictive Sailing - Addictive Sailing news from the board

Hello,A few news on board Addictive Sailing from the far north of the ARC! The weather here is pretty fair with nice squall, beautiful thunderstorms, refreshing showers, and a sea which look like a rollercoaster !For the time being no body commit vomit , but some tryIt’s funny to see à such big gap between those whose choose the south option and us. At 12:00 today, there is nearly 900 milles of difference of latitude between the southern catamaran and us.I guess it’s warmer and dryer down there but as we are slower than our main competitor, Guyader, we have to find a way to beat them! No Pain, No Gain!Today, most of the crew is busy to try to fix the spinnaker which decide to burst two days ago.The first mate, the young Alicia, is recovering from a big bruise on the leg after the boat. read more...

Minga - Día 4, disfrutando

Vamos bien. High Cotton - Progress and a thanksgiving at sea

Believe it or not, today is the first thanksgiving in the central Atlantic for us, and even the first ever forsome onboard! Warm chicken and perhaps a shower await! Not feeling so cold turkey anymore! Currently we find ourselves 700 miles deep in the direction of Grenada! Despite our autopilot failure and intensive hand steering, small victories are keeping the High Cotton morale easily reachable, each moment! Things like being two days sailing away from halfway, noticing miles tick by one hundred at a time, a few good fish, banter-filled jokes and the exhausted expressions on the waking faces of the midnight watch crew; evoke new smiles every time. Being at sea also sets stage for the valuable exchanging of knowledge, vocabulary, jargon and skills, especially in a cross cultural. read more...

Chula - Chula Log 03 - First 6 Days

I've really struggled to write about the first days of our passage. There's lots to talk about - it's not everyday you set sail to cross the Atlantic after all, but it's taken us 600nm for me to get into the swing of things... Joe and I always wanted to capture 'real life's aspects of sailing so I'll give it a go here - it'll all be forgotten when the wind changes! So why has today been different? It's Wednesday 24th November 6 days into the passage, and probably 11 or so days to go... Today started as usual, staggered starts from Joe, Tim and I as we emerge from our night watch schedule; although last night was a light but steady wind allowing restful sleep rather than sloppy, banging sails. Positive #1!Positive #2; a sat phone text conversation with Coco - we're not alone in. read more...

Walkabout - Walkabout Time - In a World of our Own - Day6 Mindelo to Grenada

N12:02.9 W37:05.7Our clocks went back yesterday - no act of Parliament required. We have taken the practical decision to change our clocks by minus 1hour every 10 degrees of longitude that we cross. This has 2 benefits - it means that sun rise and sun set occur at ‘normal’ times. It also means that we won’t arrive in Grenada with ‘jet lag’ as we are on a different time zone.We will be on Grenada time for the last couple of days. But does mean that things get a bit confusing with the time.We keep 2 specific clocks on UST (GMT for us Brits) - the brass ships clock on the wall, and the chart plotter. Our watches are now on ‘Walkabout Time’, which is currently 2 hours behind UST.Our light winds and tricky decisions continue. Our average speed since the start has dropped to 5.9 knots. We have headed. read more...

Arabella - wednesday

What a day Wednesday turned out to be. We were not moving so smooth. The wind was really light all day. We had purposely choose to sail really south but didn’t expect to find all the seaweed/sea plant that was floating everywhere. It was catching our rudder and prop shaft under the boat and most distressingly it was snagging our fishing lures. We’d changed the lures a dozen times and tried everything to prevent the constant snagging and we had almost given up when zzzzzzzzzzz came that beautiful sound. 1hour later and the sails dropped we landed a 500lb Blue Marlin!!! What a joy. What a Wednesday it turned out to be. The celebration was a can of beer!!!! And lots of food. BBQ on us when we get to Grenada. read more...

Morgane of Sark - just another day at the ocean

We had a good Wednesday and all four of us were awake and outside almost the whole day. We are getting used of sleeping in parts. It was a warm and sunny day and after running the watermaker, we could take a cold shower. Highlight of the morning was a small whale or orca behind the boat. Mila and Merel were on watch and heard a peeping sound. The thought maybe a bird had flown into the cabin. The sound woke Herco up. Than they saw the whale. Or Orca. But, he didn’t stick around and left after a few minutes again.Later on we had a huge group of dolfins passing by. They were chasing something and also didn’t stick around to swim and play along the boat.Catch of the day was a huge bush of seaweed. Another highlight: Merel baked delicious pancakes for all of us. About 20 bananas turned black. read more...

Misty Mhor - Misty Midweek Wednesday 24th

So here we are on our fourth day at sea. Still heading south towards the Cape Verde islands. We have covered 344 nautical miles and Verde is another 400 nm to go. We should pick up stronger trades before then so can turn westward toward St Lucia. Last night’s tea was fantastic again. Home made bread rolls and linguine vongole washed down with a nice bottle of Mhor water, a cheeky little number with a hint of oil and plastic (that could have been the glass). My watch tonight is 04-06. There is enough light to see the kite filling, pulling us along at up to 6 knots in around a 10 knot north easterly wind. I’m engrossed in a book called Where the Crawdads Sings, so the shift passes quickly. Soon be time to make a tea for Alistair. We kept the kite up all morning, making good southerly. read more...

Mary Doll - Day 4: Milky Way Kid

We started today under crystal clear starry skies, the Milky Way was visible as a great swirling cloud of every colour imaginable, although we were often much more interested in the ALDI imitation Milky Way bar and cup of tea keeping us warm on deck. Still waiting for these balmy ‘shorts and t-shirt’ evening watches to kick in as we were promised, starting to think we might have been duped… The remainder of the morning watch was spent wishing I had paid more attention in high school physics and could name even one of the constellations twinkling above us, we must remember to offer Brian Cox a berth next time…Mary Doll was given another morning escort by a school of dolphins at 10.30, this must be prime time for a morning stroll in the world of aquatic mammals as it’s the second day on. read more...

Emily Morgan - Day 4 - The butter check

The crew of Emily Morgan have settled into a staggered 3-hours-on-6-hours-off watch system with Anna and Bones on standby (i.e. continuously on watch until we convince them of our sailing ability!) The watch leaders began with (Todd)0000-0300; (Elizabeth)0300-0600; (Brody)0600-0900; (Todd)0900-1200 and so on. The three sailors began with (Clare)0100-0400; (Alex)0400-0700; (Keith)0700-1100; (Clare)1100-1300 and so on. This way there is an overlap between watches so that information is transmitted and it allows time for people to adjust. So, it's a nine-hour rotation which repeats every three days, and no one gets stuck with the night watch.Today was a day of consistent North Easterly winds. We were making upwards of 5 to 8 knots. Maalu IV - Day 4 Sailing at last

It has been a strange first few days in the Atlantic.Light or no wind and at times a glassy sea. We even had fog during our secondnight. The second night's entertainment included brilliant bioluminescence andfour visits by dolphins at various times. The moon is waning but is still sobright that we don't need a torch at night and it illuminated the visitingdolphins beautifully. Fishing has been unsuccessful thus far and we arealready down one lure despite the lack of a bite. Last night saw our first real sailing with 8-14 knotwinds and a comfortable broad reach as we headed deeper south. The question in all our minds is when do we jibe andhead west. The old adage 'go south until the butter melts, then head west' hasresulted in a lot of discussion.Namely, how do we define when the butter. read more...

Time Out - Day 3 - Pêche “miraculeuse”

Khamsin - Khamsin Day 6.5

Whatever happened to the hours of boredom and the need for copious books and podcasts promised by our skipper? We haven’t stopped! In fact having sat next to Serge from Piment Rouge at the crew dinner, I’m beginning to wonder if someone smuggled ‘a small furry animal’ (French superstition reference) on board. Hahaha. Time consuming but a successful and very productive day. We took advantage of the low wind to send Milo up the mast again, fix the generator, patch the sail and attempt a halyard repair. Yay!Enjoying an afternoon snack and a quick sea swim our spirits very much lifted by the Wurzels version of ‘Go West’. Apologies to the Pet Shop Boys! Now fingers crossed let’s get sailing…Oh and as I write this I can hear everyone trying to persuade Milo up the mast just one more time…. read more...

Another gorgeous moonlit night (tho it’s a shame our slow start has caught us in low wind). The flying fish are unexpectedly a true delight as they skim the waves - a silver shimmering. The young ones, iridescent pinks and purples, are especially captivating. As my only prior experience of flying fish has been in a burger it’s a lovely surprise! We also had a stunning fish following in our wake yesterday evening: about 1.5-2 m long with a brilliant turquoise tail fin. Never seen anything like it before. Any ideas?
