Blue Pearl - Denarau

I just noticed it has been a week since I last wrote about our around the world adventure, so it is time to go again.

Denarau , where we are, is a full service marina on the main Fiji island of Viti Levu. Mega yachts are parked here and it has many of the amenities of a Caribbean type yachting center. In fact it is to Australian and New Zealand yachties what St. Maarten or Antigua are to US cruisers.

Blue Pearl is taking a rest here for some maintenance and repair work. The captain is staying aboard to supervise the work, and the crew, Brita and Mike, are venturing out , in different directions, to pursue some of their own interests.

Last time we talked about our phenomenal experience at the Paradise anchorage at Taveuni Island, although obviously this is all, relative things have gone a little "down hill" ever since.

First we stopped in Savusavu which is the main city on Vanua Levu the second largest island in Fiji. We found little of interest there so moved on, the following morning, to the marine reserve of Namena, which, reportedly offers the best of diving and snorkeling to be found in the Fiji Islands. It is a beautiful place. Unfortunately cyclone Winston beat up on it two years ago and destroyed most of the land based facilities and many of the surrounding reefs, sending the fish and other creatures of the sea elsewhere.

We then decided to point the bow in the direction of Denarau but did so in three day sails with overnight stops at beautiful and very quiet anchorages. Just two boats, Blue Pearl and Callisto. Peter and Anissa are on Callisto, he is a retired dentist from Wyoming and she also worked in the practice with him. We have been "buddy boating" for a while.

At one stop, the Volivoli beach resort we encountered a few other rally boats and enjoyed a pleasant dinner together ashore.

And then we arrived here yesterday to find everything but peace and quiet. Actually a pleasant change for a change...!

Captain Ruud.
