Helen - Day 7 - Mutiny averted

We have crossed the halfway point and have only 966 miles to go before I leave Yacht Helen.

Yesterday was a challenging day. It all started when the catering department made some lovely scones for afternoon tea.

The first argument was over how do you pronounce the word "scone". There was clearly an english north/south divide amongst the crew.

Then things started to get ugly. Do you put the clotted cream on first and then the jam or is it jam first and then the clotted cream? It got so heated that I thought that we may have a mutiny on our hands!

So I stepped in and said that when Iguanas see food they eat it. So we did and they were delicious.

When I was on the Island of Sao Vincente (Mindelo is the capital), I met an orphaned street kid. I ask him what he wanted most in life. His reply was simple, " my mum".

In Mindelo it is not unusual for children to be abandoned at birth because the mother doesn't have the skills to bring up the child. This is too common when the mother is under 18 years old.

The charity Children's Villages is actively trying to unite mother and child and then help the mother to develop skills such as food preparation and domestic tasks, with the aim of offering them both an independent future.

All this costs money and the charity needs euros 10,000 per month just for running expenses.

Please sponsor me for any amount big or small. My journey ends in six days time when my appeal will end.

Ed the Iguana,
On the way to the Galapogos
