Start of the ARC - Are we moving??
The fantastic atmosphere of the “leaving party” along the wall of Las Palmas and the excitement of telling Rambler to watch their back as we crossed the start line sent us on a nice downwind leg to the bottom of Gran Canaria . turning west with our spinnaker up and everyone enjoying a fabulous sail, came to an end at 8pm when we had to try to drop it and ending up not using the sock but stuffing it into the forward locker at 18 knotts winds speed . Half an hour later no wind and a very peaceful overnight sail. The next day no wind. Then the next 12 hours 20 knot on the nose running at 8 knots chasing down Calypso and getting within 7 NM  before they head down and leave us to decide if to stay up north or follow them . we will check after this next weather forecast .

Having just spent a week of seasickness on the delivery of Hanse Sailor to Las Palmas, was I glad to wake up on the first morning of the ARC with a calm sea and no wind! I’m not too sure the rest of the crew who actually wanted to move felt the same though, as we were almost going backwards! Moving at just about 1 knot definitely has its good points though; we were able to sort out the mess of the Spinnaker we’d made last night, and after all the hard work we all jumped off the boat and went for a swim which was absolutely FANTASTIC! and involved hanging onto the back and kicking as fast and as hard as we could to get the boat moving! Breaking rule 42
Later this afternoon we were STILL going past the volcano Telde, and according to the boss (still not sure if he was just having me on!) the ashes of which I was wiping off my t-shirt!
What more could we ask for on our first 24 hours than our first Roast dinner and apple crumble at sunset.....
