Paw Paw - Log Day 290: Consequences of Our Strategy

Today has been a mixed bag. Prior to this psssage we had taken the decision to sail Paw Paw more aggressively in order to keep our speed up and get to Opua ahead of the next wave of unpleasant weather. We knew, of course, that this strategy would have some consequences.

In particular, we would make sail changes immediately to get the best out of the conditions as they fluxuated and we would motor-sail or motor as needed. This is different to previous passages in that we normally postpone sail changes to coincide with watch changes and we barely use the motors unless we start to bob.

While the strategy has been successful for this passage thus far, we have had to make numerous sail changes throughout the day and night and the motors have been switched on and off like light bulbs as conditions have fluxuated enormously, leaving us both suffering from a degree of sleep deprivation.

We are, however, taking every moment to catch up on sleep. We're eating well and staying warm as the temperature drops with each degree that we sail south.
