Gozwoz - Day 6 from Bermuda

Yesterday evening we met the promised north-easterly wind and subsequently underwent a visitation from the Great Examiner. A feature of the visitation was the duration and weight of the rain which fell in biblical quantities for about 10 hours and undoubtedly helped us by keeping the sea flat despite the wind. Since the bimini, the shelter over the cockpit, provided much needed shelter from the rain it was not put away as it usually is at night until it reached the point of beginning to lift off at which point it started to disassemble itself. It appears to have survived unscathed.

We are now supposedly moving to an area of south-easterly wind which we hope to reach later tomorrow. The plan is to use it to recover the northing we lost to the north-easterly. We will then need to position ourselves for the approach to the Azores.

Most other boats have reported a lack of fish in the area. Plainly the minnow is an exceptional lure, having been taken yesterday, though the fish got away. It happens you know. Undoubtedly the minnow will be back in action when fishing resumes.

A number of birds have visited us in recent days. A small thrush-like bird shared a biscuit with the Bosun and Coxswain recently. Of the birds that fly around us the most regular is the Great Shearwater, a spectacular flyer who commonly flies below the level of the wave tops and, unlike the Manx Shearwater, is inquisitive enough to follow us for periods. We also see a larger bird, presumably a skua, looking for someone to bully.
