Makena - Pacific Crossing - Halfway to go!

Writing this on the morning of March 12th, just over 1400 nm from our destination. This means we have less than halfway to go!

Yesterday was an eventful day on Makena to say the least. We had to fix an electrical furler, we lost one bolt from that and then later our rear nav light, we didn’t climb the mast to fix the spinnacker halyard but we hooked a 2m+ long striped marlin! To say that Luc had fun would be a massive understatement. On this crossing so far we’ve hooked 9 fish but only had one for dinner. We’ve lost 7 lures…

We have this marlin on video so we’ll upload something if we ever get good internet again ;)

We battled the marlin for slightly over two full hours - we have video evidence and a very funny Raymarine track - unfortunately it snapped the line right at the very end, while against boat and before we could do catch and release! After seeing his Dad spend so long at the fishing pole, all Kai wants tohe do is be near it now -  keeps pointing at it. Interestingly the marlin had a remora attached. Remora was the name of our last boat.

At some point during the fishing we also dropped the main but managed to have a loose reef line pull off our rear white navigation light. So with marlin attached we suddenly went into man overboard board and almost got it back aboard but unfortunately it sank.

In other news, Dave is making soda bread here (WOOP!). Dad is on watch with a cup of Barry’s tea in hand. We can start counting down the days :)
