Sojourner - Day four: Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone from the Sojourner crew. Been a great day of sailing, nothing important broke, nobody got hurt, and we may have moved up a spot or two in the standings......all of which is great and for which we are thankful......but mostly we are thankful for this opportunity afforded us by all those we have back at home. Well, we are also thankful for rum, and veils, but that's another story. And a special "Happy Birthday" shout-out from Bob to his daughter Nicole.

Tom and Ken saw a lot of threatening clouds on their 6pm to 1am shift last night, but only had a slight drizzle a couple of times. On the following watch Bob and Pete had steady, sometimes hard, rain for an hour. Woke up this morning to mostly sunny skies and warmer temps and the winds, all day, have been 15 to 20 knots allowing an easy close reach along the rhumb line. On the other hand, where is all that nice laid-back downwind wing & wing sailing we were promised? Current forecast along our projected track is continued reaching across northerly winds in the 20kt range until probably Sunday.

So Thanksgiving dinner has been prepared on a 20 degree heel. Bob cooked a "turkey" which looks very much like a chicken (could be a duck, we don't speak enough Spanish). He's mastered peeling potatoes on a 30 degree tilt and, so far, not spilling the gravy, stuffing, or the green beens. Deciding discretion was the better part of valor, Bob decided to place the bird on the cabin sole so it couldn't slide anywhere (can't fall off the floor, right?). Keelhauling was threatened of anyone stepping on the bird. We have pictures for those who may need visual proof. Three things we couldn't come up with; yams, pumpkin pie, and cranberry sauce. But we DID find an amazing apple/blueberry sauce in Las Palmas which may replace cranberry sauce for all of us in the future. The feast was held in the cockpit and the weather gods smiled on us, dousing Pete with a wave 10 minutes before dinner and then leaving us in peace. Must have been because Pete (our token Brit crew), somewhat familiar with Thanksgiving from his time living in Canada, still has some holes in his knowledge of our traditions.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's installment "Bob catches a fish or 'Where did we put that can of Tuna'?"
